RECENT NEWS

Forest Hills Achieves Highest State Rating:

Forest Hills received a rating of Outstanding on the report cards released by the state last month, confirming continued high student achievement.  This is the fourth consecutive year that our school has achieved the highest state rating.  These results are possible because of the dedication and efforts of our staff and parents.  I am continually grateful to be working with such an exceptional community!

OMSI Night:

Join us on February 8, from 6:00-8:00 pm, for a free and fabulous night at OMSI, exlusively for Forst Hills families.  Bring your entire family and discover incredible exhibits like Samson the Colossal T. Rex Discovery, Space: A Journey to Our Future, and Science on a Sphere.

Welcome to Forest Hills Elementary

A message from Principal Gwen Hill
Forest Hills Elementary School is located in the First Addition neighborhood of Lake Oswego, Oregon.  The school's attendance area encompasses several additional neighborhoods and the downtown.  Forest Hills' philosophy is based on a simple idea.  We are a community brought together to support the academic, social and emotional growth of our students.  We work together as teachers, staff and parents to open the door to the world of learning.  We support and encourage each child to reach their full potential.

February Happenings:

I am excited to let you know that our teacher websites are now on line.  This new format is both informative and easy to read.  In addition to being a primary source of communication, taking the place of weekly classroom newsletters, teachers hope to continue to add links to a variety of helpful resources and provide a way to showcase student work.  Your child’s classroom may be accessed by going to “Our Staff,” clicking on the team, and then on their teacher’s name.

I want to thank teachers for their work on this important addition to our school website and I would like to specifically thank Siouxsie Jennette and Wende Milner who, without their help and guidance, this could not have been done.

As we move towards being greener and more efficient, please feel free to share any thoughts you may have on this change.  It is an exciting work in progress!

UPDATES

State Testing:

Our students in grades 3 through 6 will begin taking the State Assessments.  These are multiple-choice tests, taken on computers, in reading/literature, math and science at the 5th grade level.

Students may take these tests at their own pace using as much time as they need.  For students who have not exceeded standards on the initial test, teachers will provide a second testing opportunity later in the year using a different test version.

We have decided that it would be an advantage to our students to be tested in their reading and math groups.  That provides teachers the flexibility to schedule time in one of our computer labs to meet the specific needs of their class.  Testing sessions will vary from class to class as teachers monitor their students’ progress.  Teachers will include the test schedules in their newsletters and on their web sites.

On February 3, 4, 5 our 4th grade students will be taking Statewide Writing Assessment tests.  Teachers will also be giving the 3rd grade students similar tests for inclusion in their portfolios.

Please support and encourage your child without creating undue anxiety.  A full night’s sleep, a good breakfast, punctual arrival and good attendance is perhaps the best preparation you can provide.  Thank you for your help and support.
